Kona is the Big Game Fishing Capital of the World. Because of the excellent
fishing and great weather year round, there are fishing tournaments nearly every month of the year.
These tournaments range from one day, $100 entry fees to the
five day, $6,900 team entry fees for the Hawaiian International
Billfish Tournament. Winners of these tournaments receive trophies, and / or cash prizes, up to $65,000, depending upon the tournament.
Most of these big game tournaments feature the Pacific
Blue Marlin and stress tag and release. However there are several tournaments that target other species of fish such
as ono (wahoo), mahimahi, ahi (yellowfin tuna) and spearfish. Also included in the tournament schedule are several wahine (ladies) tournaments, which are very popular.
